A long-awaited part of the Springfield Rail Improvements Project (SRIP), which is relocating all passenger and freight traffic from the Third Street corridor to Tenth Street in Springfield, Illinois, has been a centralized transportation hub that will serve various public transportation needs. With SRIP well underway, Sangamon County, the Sangamon Mass Transit District (SMTD) and City of Springfield officials are now also focusing on a transportation center along the Tenth Street rail corridor.

The Springfield-Sangamon County Transportation Center will combine SMTD buses, Amtrak, intercity buses, paratransit vehicles, and taxis at one location with an adjacent parking garage. The goal is to promote public transit use and provide improved service to current riders by reducing travel time, relieving congestion and improving access. Also, it is hoped that having one transportation center will stimulate transit-oriented development around the proposed site and enhance growth along the Tenth Street corridor. The Center's geographic boundaries are Washington Street on the north, Eleventh Street on the east, Adams Street on the south and Ninth Street on the west.

Project Timeline

The design for the Springfield-Sangamon County Transportation Center Project will be finished by the end of 2021. During this time, officials, along with its consulting team led by Hanson Professional Services, Inc., will: determine what amenities/services need to be in and near the center, develop a conceptual plan for the center, create a transit-oriented development plan, and prepare cost estimates. Construction of the Transportation Center is to be completed in 2025.

Your Involvement

Key to creating a transportation center that will serve current and future riders is involving the public. We want to hear from transit users, community leaders, interested citizens and other stakeholders.

As part of the planning process, the consulting team has assembled a Stakeholder Advisory Group that meets periodically to give their input and provide feedback.
