Hanson Professional Services Inc. along with RDG Planning & Design Inc. has completed a Feasibility Study for the redevelopment of the Third Street rail corridor after the railroad tracks are removed in 2026. The redevelopment of this corridor would allow for a linear greenway utilizing multi-use paths with varying contextually specific zones throughout the corridor that helps bring a high level of community connectivity.

The proposed greenway would extend from the Wabash/Interurban Trail at Stanford Avenue to the Illinois State Fairgrounds along Sangamon Avenue. While this greenway will become the backbone of Springfield, the auxiliary uses in and adjacent to the corridor elevate the potential success of redevelopment opportunities. Funding is currently being pursued for the next step, which includes Phase I design and environmental study. If design and construction funding is obtained, the project could be completed by 2029.
